Тhe 39th anniversary of the Chornobyl catastrophe
26/04/2025
On the 39th anniversary of the Chornobyl catastrophe , we honour all those whose lives were changed forever by this tragedy — the victims, the liquidators, the affected communities, and everyone who continues working to protect us from its lingering aftermath.
Chornobyl was not just a tragedy of radiation — it was a tragedy born of silence and Soviet lies that cost people’s lives.
Russia’s war of aggression has brought danger back to nuclear sites across Ukraine. This February, a Russian drone hit the Chornobyl Confinement. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has attacked and occupied Ukrainian nuclear sites, recklessly putting their safety at risk.
Over the years, together with international partners, the EU has contributed more than €1 billion to strengthen nuclear safety in Ukraine. This included supporting the construction of the New Safe Confinement. We remain committed to the highest standards of nuclear safety and nuclear security worldwide.
Chornobyl is not just history — it is a warning for us all. We must never forget that what starts with the weapon of lies and aggression to deny the truth, endangers countless lives.
