Ukraine to receive €7 million for development of Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

According to the Recovery Window network, a media partner of the EU NEIGHBOURS east programme, the contributing countries to the International Chernobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA) have promised to provide Ukraine with about €7 million.

The additional funding was announced during a meeting of the Assembly of Contributing Countries to the Account, organised by the Account’s manager, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The money will be used to restore equipment destroyed and damaged during the Russian occupation, as well as nuclear and radiation safety projects at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

From the €7 million allocated, €1.7 million will be provided by the European Commission, €5 million by Canada, and the rest by other contributing countries.

Ukraine has already received more than €26 million from 18 countries contributing to the Account.

The International Chernobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA) was established in November 2020 by the EBRD, at the request of the government of Ukraine, to support the development of a comprehensive plan for Chernobyl. Since the start of the Russian war against Ukraine the Account remit has been widened to support a range of measures to support the restoration of nuclear safety, security and decommissioning abilities within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
