ZERO WASTE CITIES IN UKRAINE
Project Description
This project aims to improve the waste management system in four Ukrainian municipalities by:
- Conducting in-depth audits of existing systems to develop efficient solutions.
- Strengthening institutional capacity through comprehensive training.
- Ensuring long-term sustainable waste management planning, developing Zero Waste Strategies with European experts.
- Launching pilot projects in each municipality for various waste streams.
- Promoting project outcomes through case studies, blueprints, and open-access webinars and workshops.
The Сonsortium between four Ukrainian (UA) and four EU municipalities to assess and improve waste management systems in UA municipalities has been created within the project. An expert group from EU municipalities and other Сonsortium members will provide feedback and supervision, supported by local NGOs.

Specific Objective
Key objectives include:
- Assessing the current waste management system to develop tailored strategies.
- Providing extensive capacity-building for UA municipal staff through five educational online workshops and study visits to EU consortium members.
- Developing Zero Waste Strategies for diverse examples of successful management, involving Lutsk, Kherson, Derhachi, and Pokrovsk.

Expected Results
- Improved waste management systems implemented in 4 Ukrainian municipalities, positively impacting over 648,000 citizens and local public services.
- Each municipality will obtain reliable waste management data through a comprehensive needs assessment, enabling evidence-based planning post-project.
- Institutional capacity of municipalities strengthened through documented training outcomes integrated into internal policies and procedures.
- Zero Waste Strategies developed and adopted, aligning all stakeholders toward long-term resource efficiency and waste prevention.
- Additional funding was mobilized for infrastructure projects that are part of the Zero Waste Strategies developed within the project. These pilots enabled municipalities to gain practical experience in line with EU waste management principles and strengthened their capacity to attract future investments.
