Schools in Kharkiv region to be renovated for sponsors’ money: which ones?

In Kharkiv region, seven schools will be renovated at the expense of sponsors. This is reported on the website of the U-LEAD with Europe programme.

The schools will be renovated by the Smilyvі Charitable Foundation and the volunteer initiative “Brave to Restore” with the support of the U-LEAD with Europe Programme and the External Action Service of the European Commission.

Here is the list of schools which will benefit from the programme:

• Rohan Academic Lyceum (village of Dokuchayevske)
• Rusko-Lozivskyi Lyceum
• Izyum Lyceum No. 11
• Kapitolivka Lyceum, Izyum district
• Balakliya Lyceum No. 5, Izyum district
• Yakovenkove Secondary School, Izyum district
• H. Semyradsky Lyceum in Pechenihy, Chuhuiv district.

According to Vitaliy Selyk, director of the Smilyvі Charitable Foundation, depending on the extent of the damage, different schools will have different restoration work carried out by the beginning of autumn. Each school will have its list of works. Some schools will have windows installed, others will have their roofs repaired, classroom doors replaced and classrooms and corridors renovated.

According to Selyk, the Foundation plans not only to rebuild what was destroyed, but also to give the schools a “new lease of life”.

“We will improve the educational facilities. If we have enough money, we will try to renew equipment and furniture. There are instructions to make the school more attractive to children,” said Selyk.

Volunteers, local residents and parents will be actively involved in the reconstruction activities, which the activists say will help reduce the cost of the work – and therefore achieve more – unite the community.

As for Kharkiv, the UN will help rebuild the city’s schools, some 19 of them. Last year, 48 educational institutions in Kharkiv were repaired at the expense of the city budget. According to the mayor’s office, 117 of Kharkiv’s 200 schools have been damaged in one way or another by Russian shelling.

Another challenge is that every school in the city and region must be equipped with a shelter to reopen in September. According to state construction standards, two districts only – Krasnohradsky and Bogodukhivsky – need about UAH 2 billion to provide schools with adequate shelters. Krasnohradsky and Bogodukhivsky districts (formerly Valkivskyi) have been selected as the districts where schools will likely open in September. Kharkiv needs three times more money.
