The first phase of modernisation of the cargo terminal at the Porubne–Siret border crossing on the Ukrainian–Romanian border has been completed. The works are intended to speed up the passage of freight vehicles and increase the capacity of one of the key road routes between Ukraine and Romania.
As part of the first phase, a new cement-concrete surface was laid, drainage and wastewater treatment systems were installed, and a border guard pavilion, radiation-control system, and external lighting were put in place.
The next phase will involve installing modern equipment for customs and border controls, as well as developing additional infrastructure. Once the modernisation is complete, four additional lanes for trucks will be added at the crossing point.
After relevant works are also carried out on the Romanian side, the capacity of the Porubne–Siret crossing could approximately double, reaching up to 150 trucks per day in the export direction. This is expected to make border crossings faster and more predictable.
“Porubne–Siret is one of the key crossing points on our border with the European Union. Our task is to increase its capacity and remove infrastructure bottlenecks that affect the speed of freight movement. Four additional lanes will enable more freight vehicles to pass through and make logistics between Ukraine and Romania faster and more predictable. It is important that such measures are mirrored on the Romanian side of the border as well,” said Serhii Derkach, First Deputy Minister for Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine.
The modernisation is being implemented with EU support under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme. The project is financed on a co-financing basis: 50% of the funding is provided by the EU and the remaining 50% comes from Ukraine’s state budget.
