Respect and recognition
«We acknowledge and praise the invincible courage and the valuable, outstanding work that Ukrainian journalists and media workers show and do on the ground and often under peril to their own life.
Ukrainian journalists are shedding light on the human cost of Russia’s occupation. They are safeguarding the people’s right to reliable information. Role of free journalism is not only to inform truthfully – but it is also to counteract lies and manipulations masterfully composed by Russia. To explain what is hard to understand. Help to steer at the sea of information. Expose what is hidden from us.
The European Union provides large support to media and journalists in Ukraine for exactly these reasons. We will step up our support for press freedom and those who report truth in Ukraine with a new EUR 10 million funding package. The financial support will be well targeted and aiming at making media more resilient, also financially. This new funding builds on more than EUR 100 million the European Union has already invested in the country’s independent media since 2017. This significant funding highlights the EU’s long-term commitment to Ukrainian media, especially regional journalists – who act as local voices, trusted by their communities.»
