Charting New Waters: TAIEX Promotes Sustainable Aquaculture in Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia

A TAIEX multi-country workshop on developing sustainable aquaculture for Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia took place in Brussels on 15-16 June. DG NEAR organised it jointly with DG MARE to help the Trio countries reduce their dependence on Russia – by exchanging best practice on sustainable aquaculture and resilient food systems.

Over 200 participants joined the event – public officials from Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia, including state secretaries and deputy ministers – as well as academia and private sector representatives. Together with experts from the Member States and international organisations, they discussed how to make the aquaculture sector in the Black Sea region more sustainable and resilient. The event was opened by Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General of DG MARE, and Lawrence Meredith, Director for Neighbourhood East and Institution Building at DG NEAR.

The fishery and aquaculture sectors play a key role in providing food and nutrition security. By reducing dependence on imported seafood and increasing domestic production, Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia can enhance their resilience to external supply disruptions.

This workshop was first in a series of TAIEX events supporting the Trio’s efforts to develop sustainable and resilient aquaculture. It will be followed by study visits to Member States, tailor-made workshops, and expert missions.
