Ukraine will soon receive the first batch of 5,700 solar panels to provide electricity to critical infrastructure subject to Russian missile attacks.
According to Ukrinform, this was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen in her video message posted on Twitter.
“I can now announce that the first batch of solar panels will soon be delivered to Ukraine. ENEL (Italian energy company – ed.) will donate 5,700 panels to Ukraine. The solar panels are manufactured in Europe, in Catania, with the support of the EU Innovation Fund,” she said, emphasizing that Russia is deliberately attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
According to the President of the European Commission, these panels can cover 11 thousand square meters of public building roofs to provide electricity to schools, hospitals, and fire stations.
“I am confident that other European companies, as well as other EU members, will be inspired by this first step so that Ukraine can run on clean, domestically generated electricity,” von Der Leyen said.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Energy, 5,700 solar panels will be delivered to Ukraine by summer. This decision was discussed by German Galushchenko, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, at an online meeting with EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and Enel CEO Francesco Starace.
“With this first project, we want to launch a broader initiative to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security by developing its renewable capacities. This is an excellent example of European solidarity in action and how investments in clean technologies can make Europe more energy-secure and independent,” said EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson.
Solar panels from the Italian company ENEL will be delivered to Ukraine with the logistical support of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and the Energy Community.
“The gradual decentralization of Ukraine’s energy system guarantees its security and resilience to attacks from Russia. In implementing this course, the Ministry of Energy will rely on stimulating the development of green energy. In particular, it is crucial to expand opportunities for autonomous power supply of facilities that ensure the country’s functioning. We are grateful to ENEL, all European companies, and the European Commission for their strong support and solidarity in the struggle for life, light, and heat in Ukrainian homes,” Galushchenko said.
As Ukrinform reported, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that Kyiv received two unique solar power plants from its French partners as humanitarian aid. These solar power plants will be installed in medical institutions in the Sviatoshynskyi district of Kyiv.
