EU project
New bomb shelters for Ukraine’s schools
Project Description
In recent years, education in stressful conditions has greatly affected the educational process in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, children have suffered significant learning losses. Remote learning, air alerts, living in shelters, lack of electricity are the external factors that have affected and continue to affect the quality of education. For schools in Ukraine to be operational it is obligatory to have a shelter or at least a properly equipped basement. Only 1730 schools out of 13 564 have specialized, anti-radiation shelters. The main objective of this program is to bring children back to school in an offline learning environment, and the aim is to set up 5 shelters in higher-risk areas where children are currently unable to go to school due to the lack of shelters and the high risk of shelling: Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv. All shelters will be underground, planned for 700 - 1,000 people. The new shelters will not only protect from attacks, but they will also allow children to continue learning and participating in extracurricular activities during air raids. It will be used as an underground school. The newly built shelters will be with radiation protection and dual use. Dual-purpose shelters allow their use in peacetime for the needs of educational institutions.
