Preservation of ancient clothing of the central and eastern regions of Ukraine
Folk clothing is not only an integral attribute of decorative and applied art, but also an important component of the spiritual and cultural development in society. With the support of the EU, it was possible to rescue a bright collection of folk outfits that originated in central and eastern regions of Ukraine from the aggressor’s artillery shelling and take them to a safe place.
Russian war will not stop Ukrainian culture
About the project
Each region of Ukraine is a unique tiny universe with its own traditions, colours, features of artistic and musicalculture. One of the striking features allowing to unmistakably establish even a little more than a hundred years ago from which part of the country people come from was their clothes. Style, shapes, combinations of colours and items, even with their internal diversity, had distinctive and unique features in each of the regions. In general, all this colourful diversity was and remains to be a unique and magnificent mosaic artefact in the Ukrainian cultural heritage.
The unique collection of folk costumes of the central and eastern regions of Ukraine was saved from the aggressor’s artillery and taken to a safe place thanks to the financial support from the House of Europe. Moreover, with the received stipend, OTOLOVKO Creative Art Hub, in partnership with Kamianets-Podilskyi University and local civil society, organised and held a number of events for interregional networking, psychological adaptation of artists from occupied regions to work in war conditions away from native lands, and promoting unique heritage from past centuries. The plans include digitisation of the rescued Ukrainian folk costumes and their promotion across the EU countries through electronic and social media, as well as online and offline events and collaboration with creative hubs in Ukraine and the European Union.
