The first thermal refurbishment project for educational institutions financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) has been launched in Ternopil, with a total of 23 kindergartens and 16 schools to be insulated.
“Preschool educational institution No. 32 (TZDOYAS No. 32) will be the first in the city to be modernized and insulated. The reconstruction started on 3 April and will last until December 2023. The total cost is estimated at UAH 18 million. Once the modernization is complete, the kindergarten will be able to save 61% of its current energy consumption. As a result, the children will have a more comfortable learning environment, and the city will reduce its energy bills,” the EU Delegation to Ukraine said in a press release.
Work on two more facilities will start this year. In total, a loan of €30.5 million has been provided for the thermal upgrading of 36 municipal educational institutions.
The thermal upgrades are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 300,000 kg per year, cut gas consumption by 140,000 cubic meters per year and extend the life of the buildings by 30 years.
The Ternopil project is part of an existing EIB loan agreement – Ukraine Municipal Infrastructure Development Programme. This is a €400 million multi-sector investment programme implemented by the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine. Under this Programme, 17 cities and utilities across the country will modernize district heating, public lighting, water supply, sewerage and solid waste management systems and improve the energy efficiency of public buildings.
