As a part of new initiative, more than 200 European cities will provide Ukraine with power generators to help the country survive the winter. Many city administrations expressed their desire to help Ukraine even before the project was launched.
The EU launched the Generators of Hope campaign for Ukraine to provide Ukrainians with power generators, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola wrote on Twitter.
“10 million Ukrainians are without electricity as a result of Russia’s attacks. And we can help,” she wrote.
Metsola then shared a video calling on all cities and towns across Europe to share electricity and water with Ukraine.
As reported by Ukrinform, the European Parliament and the European Union, have shown remarkable solidarity with Ukraine on the humanitarian, military and financial front. Now it is important for the EU to provide Ukrainians with practical support to “get through the winter.
As a part of the Generators of Hope campaign, the EU cities will be able to support Ukraine. In particular, lists will be created with the needs for generators and other equipment for the cities in Ukraine. After a European city shows interest in providing assistance, the equipment will be delivered to Ukraine using the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
Dario Nardella, President of Eurocities and Mayor of Florence, informed that a number of Eurocities network members expressed their desire to provide Ukrainians with generators and other equipment even before the project was launched. He stated that a large number of generators would be delivered to Ukraine within several days, although he did not provide the exact number. At the same time, Nardella expressed hope that all cities of Eurocities, which is more than 200, will send more than one generator to Ukraine each.
What is EuroCities?
Eurocities is the network of big cities in Europe that was established in 1986. The network comprises more than 200 cities in 38 countries. Membership in Eurocities is available to any European city with population of 250,000 and more. The network was built to coordinate projects in the areas of mobility, green transition, social integration and digital innovation.
reviously, Focus reported that the Energy Ministry stated that the Russia’s strike left most consumers without power supply. The ministry informed that the missile strike led to a temporary blackout at all NPPs, most thermal and hydroelectric power plants in Ukraine.
It was also reported that according to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on November 23, Russia launched 70 cruise missiles at Ukraine, 51 of which were shot down. In addition to missiles, the aggressor attacked the Ukrainian cities with 5 Lancet-type kamikaze drones. The Russians launched missiles from fighter jets and two boats in the Black Sea.
