EU has already allocated EUR 15 million to support 150 national and regional Ukrainian media

The European Union has already allocated €15 million to support 150 Ukrainian national and regional media outlets, including the sector of journalists’ protection, according to a statement of Rémi Duflot під час Х Львівського медіафоруму, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, at the 10th Lviv Media Forum. The EU supports Ukrainian media at both the national and regional levels, as the work of journalists is extremely important.

“The work of journalists is extremely important. Thanks to them, we know what Russia is doing in Ukraine now. In the EU, we understand that there is a very large public space and media diversity here, but the inability to generate income from advertising threatens the work of journalists. That is why Ukrainian media are now very dependent on donor assistance in order to be able to continue their work. We will support those media that tell the truth. We have already allocated €50 million to support 150 different media at the national and regional levels and, in particular, for the sector of journalists’ protection in Ukraine,”, said the EU representative in Ukraine.

He reminded that Ukraine has improved its standing in the Reporters Without Borders Index by 18 positions and has achieved good results in terms of trust among global media. The EU welcomes the success in the processes of digitalization of public broadcasting and adherence to journalistic standards, he said.

“Freedom of speech and the development of independent media are very important for the European Union – these are the pillars of democracy. Disinformation is our common challenge. These media resist disinformation, and they need to be protected, because this is a very big achievement and a prerequisite in the context of Ukraine’s accession to the EU,” the diplomat added.

As a reminder, in September 2023, the Chargé d’Affaires of the EU in Ukraine, Yaroslav Tymofeyuk, reportedthat the European Union has a current portfolio of projects to support Ukrainian independent media totalling €28 million. “There are three biggest challenges for journalists during a war – their personal safety, their financial survival, and the fight against numerous manipulations and disinformation. And we in the EU support you in all these areas,” he said.

The 10th Lviv Media Forum (LMF) brought together media representatives from 36 countries. The focus topic of the 10th LMF is ‘Language for Understanding: Finding Meaning in a Polarized World.’ The event will continue from May 16 to 18.

LMF has been held in Lviv since May 2013. Over 10 years, the event has brought together over 5,500 participants; 600 speakers from 50 countries have taken part in lectures, master classes, and discussions.

The conference stage offers a platform for discussing important and relevant issues for society: war, recovery, freedom of speech, media market development, and international politics.

In 2023, the Lviv Media Forum took place on May 25 to 27. The focus topic was ‘After the war or before the war. How can civilizations defeat chaos?’
