With the EU support, emergency care facilities and wastewater treatment were renovated in Nemishaeve

19/12/2024
  • On 18 December 2024, the renovated emergency care facilities at Nemishaeve’s hospital and the village’s upgraded wastewater systems were inaugurated. All projects were funded by the European Union and implemented by Nefco.
  • EU and Nefco representatives, together with the village administration and staff from the hospital and the wastewater pumping stations celebrated the completion of the projects.
  • These projects have significantly improved emergency healthcare and municipal services for village residents and internally displaced persons living in the community.

On Wednesday 18 December 2024, the hospital in Nemishaeve was officially inaugurated, with representatives from the EU, Nefco, the village administration, and hospital staff attending the celebrations. The hospital had sustained severe damages during the village’s occupation in March 2022, when it was used as the headquarters of the Russian military.

As part of the project, the hospital’s first-floor emergency room was modernised. The comprehensive renovation has significantly improved the hospital’s energy efficiency, enhancing healthcare services and emergency care for local residents and internally displaced persons living in the community.

The village is now continuing the internal refurbishment of the hospital building using its own funding. The project is part of the “Housing for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Rehabilitation of Liberated Cities in Ukraine” programme. Key improvements included insulation of the building envelope, roof and windows replacement, installation of a 10-kW roof photovoltaic system with electricity storage, upgrading of the internal heating system and installation of a new individual heating substation, modernisation of the ventilation and electricity systems, as well as installation of new lighting. In addition, adjustments for people in wheelchair and with disabilities were made, basement refurbished, and fire alarm system installed.

“We are very grateful to the EU for financing the renovation and to Nefco for helping implement the project. The hospital has been completely transformed: the roof and windows were replaced, external insulation was added, and new electricity and heat networks were installed—and this is just part of the work carried out. Our medical staff are extremely satisfied, as the hospital is now not only beautiful on the outside, but also provides a much more comfortable environment for both our patients and employees,” commented Yana Horai, Chief of Medicine at the hospital.

Also, projects related to critical infrastructure repairs in Nemishaeve have been completed with EU funding under the critical infrastructure programme and were officially inaugurated on the same day. The delegation visited the two repaired wastewater pumping stations as well as a wastewater treatment plant, which is currently under construction. The energy-efficient modernised pumping stations will support to significantly improve the wastewater management processes in the community, providing reliable wastewater infrastructure.

“During the occupation in the spring of 2022, our infrastructure was heavily damaged. However, thanks to grant support from the European Union and Nefco, we will be able to restore nearly everything. The benefits to our community are immeasurable. In the future, most residents will have access to a stable, energy-efficient drainage system, water pipe bursts will be reduced, and once the repair of the wastewater treatment plant is ready the sanitary quality of the wastewater will improve significantly. We are deeply grateful for this substantial help in the reconstruction of our community,” said Petro Perevoznyk, Head of the Nemishaeve Territorial Community.

“These projects are good examples of how the EU is working with partners like Nefco to address urgent basic needs while laying the foundation for sustainable recovery,” said Jocelin Cornet, Head of the Reconstruction, Energy, Infrastructure, and Environment Section of the EU Delegation to Ukraine. “We are very proud to see the results of EU-funded initiatives and appreciate the commitment of our partners, Nefco and the Nemishaeve community, in building a better future for the Ukrainian people.”

“The progress achieved in Nemishaeve represents a remarkable step forward in repairing critical infrastructure and ensuring that essential services are available to the residents in the community, while also supporting long-term green recovery in Ukraine,” said Ulf Bojö, Vice President for Eastern Europe at Nefco. “Nefco remains committed to helping communities rebuild greener and better, with a focus on sustainability and resilience.”
