Laptops for Ukraine initiative extended to help museums and libraries safeguard cultural heritage

16/06/2023

The ‘Laptops for Ukraine’ initiative was expanded on 15 June to help cultural heritage institutions in Ukraine to digitally document, scan and photograph documents and objects at risk of being lost due to the war.

This initiative was launched by the European Commission in December 2022. Initially, it aimed to collect and deliver laptops, smart-phones and tablets and respond to the fundamental needs of schools, hospitals and public administrations in Ukraine’s most affected war regions.

“There is a pressing need for equipment, such as laptops, scanners and data storage devices in order to be able to scan and digitally document its cultural heritage,” says a press release by the European Commission. “The aim is to be able to trace destroyed, lost and stolen cultural heritage objects, to restore and bring them back to life, preserve and make them available online to everybody.”

Organisations interested in donating equipment to Ukrainian cultural heritage institutions can contact by email the European Commission’s Directorate General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect – Unit responsible for digital cultural heritage).
